New Volkswagen Polo GTI

Volkswagen Polo GTI

- 1.4-litre 'twin charged' engine with 178bhp
- Seven-speed twin-clutch gearbox standard
- Very much the mini Golf GTI

Even more so than the last Polo GTI, this new one looks like a miniature Golf GTI in real life. The wheels and body trim are virtually identical to its bigger brother's. Mini Golf has never been so cool.

What's all the fuss about?

Finally the Polo GTI looks like it will emulate its Golf namesake in the performance department. The turbo- and supercharged petrol engine is fast and frugal, offering a 6.9-second sprint to 62mph and real world economy hovering around the 40mpg mark.

Anything that stands out?

A seven-speed DSG twin-clutch automatic is standard, and it gets the full complement of GTI body styling. A flat-bottomed steering wheel is what you'll cling to, and you'll be sitting on the same tartan-like cloth that the fast Golf gets. The suspension is unique to the GTI too, so it should feel noticeably different to the standard car.

Estimated release date: August 2010

Estimated cost: Around £18,000
