Euro NCAP names the safest new cars

European car safety organisation Euro NCAP has named the safest cars of 2010, according to the results of its crash tests.

The winners are listed below, with each car achieving a maximum five-star rating overall.

The Alfa Romeo Giulietta, the company's latest family hatchback, was awarded the highest score for adult occupant safety - an impressive 97 percent.

The BMW 5 Series was awarded an incredible 100 percent score for its safety assistance features. That category was introduced in 2009 to measure the effectiveness of electronic stability programmes and similar advanced safety features.

Cars are generally becoming safer, as the number of five-star ratings is increasing - particularly among smaller cars. A percentage award is given to each car based on four categories: adult occupant, child occupant, pedestrian and safety assistance. Based on these scores, the car is awarded an overall star rating out of five.

Euro NCAP Secretary General Dr Michiel van Ratingen said: "Every year, car manufacturers constantly work to innovate and make their cars better and safer for the driver, whatever the size of the vehicle.

"The presence in these categories of high performing five star cars demonstrates car manufacturers' commitment to safety for all sizes of vehicles."

Euro NCAP has also named five high achievers that didn't quite make the winners list, all of which received five stars and an overall rating higher than 80 percent.
