‘Facebook closed my account – because I’m Kate Middleton’

A mum-of-three had her Facebook account suspended because she is called Kate Middleton.

The 27-year-old logged onto the social networking site and was shocked to discover she could not access her Facebook page because staff believed she was posing as Prince William’s fiancée.

The 27-year-old was locked out for four days whilst the site verified her story.

Mrs Middleton was one of hundreds of women across the globe who found themselves the victim of a worldwide campaign to prevent people from taking the future royal bride’s name in vain.

Mrs Middleton, who owns company Southwood Floors in Royston, said the suspension was a problem as her Facebook account was vital to her business.

She said: “I emailed Facebook to say I was a real Kate Middleton but didn’t hear back for four days.

“I had no warning this was about to happen, so was not able to tell my business contacts who use Facebook to stay in touch that there was about to be a problem. I’m happy it is now back up and running.”

Mrs Middleton, of Jeffrey Street, Royston, gained the now famous surname when she married three years ago.

She said: “The irony is I had an Irish surname before I married which I couldn’t wait to get rid of. And now I have ended up with one of the most famous names in the world. My husband thinks it’s really funny.”

The former Meridian School student is now starring in a photoshoot for the March edition of Cosmopolitan magazine with Prince William look-alikes with seven other Kate Middletons from across the UK, including a transsexual.

But when the royal couple walk down the aisle in Westminster Abbey on April 29, Royston’s Kate Middleton won’t be celebrating.

She said: “I will be doing what I do best – getting on with things and running my business.

“Things don’t stop because of a wedding, though I have a feeling that I might be stuck with the constant ‘how’s William?’ jokes for life now.”

Facebook said it reviewed thousands of pieces of content a day and took action to ensure the website remains a safe environment.

The March issue of Cosmopolitan goes on sale on Monday.
